The new building contains one of the city’s major branch libraries and the library services distribution centre for the north side of the city.   The building form comprises a simple elevated two storey structure with a 30 x 30m square footprint and a total floor area of approximately 1800m2.

The public library, together with associated meeting room display space canteen facilities, is located on the upper floor.  This is arranged around a centralised rooflight and set a half level above pavement level.  Primary access to the elevated public entrance is via steps and a curving ramp, located at the north-west corner of the building.

The administrative offices and staff facilities are located on the lower floor of the building.  A separate staff car park and staff access, along with a partly concealed delivery area, is located a half-level below the main road frontage on the excavated site.

The external façade of the building comprises rendered blockwork and strip glazing at lower ground floor level and a terracotta rainscreen façade system with integrated windows at first floor level.

The contract included a full range of internal finishes and a full built in and loose furniture fit-out to the requirements of the Library Service.
