The site is at the tip of one of the many headlands that form the eastern shore of Clew Bay – it is a beautiful natural landscape in every direction. The family wanted to be aware of each other in the house while maintaining an option for individuals, including guests, to have a degree of autonomous space.
The design takes the form of a courtyard house. The monopitched roof slopes inwards to the courtyard whose walls are glazed. The form of the house is a response to its location in the ‘centre’ of the landscape together and the desire to create a simple familiar external expression. It could be a farm building. Internally the house and its inhabitants is centred around the sheltered light-giving space of the courtyard. Guests stay in the attached ‘outhouse’ that looks south towards Croagh Patrick.
